About Us: The Firm Spirit of Willimapu
Crafts with Mapuche Huilliche Identity
• Our Origin: Memory and Territory
Kalkona was born in the heart of the Los Ríos Region, in the commune of La Unión, as an expression of Mapuche Huilliche identity. Our name, which in our ancestral language means "Firm Spirit", is the promise that guides each of our creations.
We are not just artisans; we are heirs to a tradition that runs in our blood.
Inspired by the memories of the weaving grandmothers of Mashue and the wisdom of those who learned to read the messages of the wind, the cold, and the rain, we rescue the legacy of our native fauna to restore it to its sacred place in the modern home. • The Craft: Wood, Wool, and Heart In the Kalkona workshop, the creative process is an act of absolute respect. We work under the premise of Rakiduam (meaningful thought), where each piece begins with the nobility of hand-carved wood, is strengthened with metal structures, and comes to life through the warmth of handcrafted weaving. Our hands recreate the Kingfisher, the Bandurria, and the Chucao, not only as ornaments, but as messengers of the forest.
Each wood grain and each stitch of wool is a tribute to the biodiversity of the Ranco Basin and a recognition of the culture of our territory.• Our Philosophy: Childhood and Autonomy
We deeply believe in the role of childhood as the future of our culture.
Therefore, our line of Attachment Toys is designed based on principles of autonomy and respect for children's natural rhythms (Pichikeche). We want our toys to be lifelong companions that foster emotional security and a connection with nature from the very first steps, combining the tenderness of fabric with the strength of our roots.
• Kalkona Today
Today we are a family business that seeks to professionalize the art of our communities. Our goal is for culturally relevant crafts to be an ambassador of our history in Chile and the world. By choosing a Kalkona piece, you carry with you the Resilient Spirit of a people who continue to weave their future without forgetting their roots.
